February 3rd: Fermentation & Medicinal Plants on the Farm
2:00 – 4:00 pm
Do you want to explore cooking and herbal medicine-making on the farm? Come to Urban Adamah to learn about fermentation, and make your own herbal projects with teens in the community!
Fermentation is all the rage. New scientific data tells us it’s the key to a happy gut. Did our ancestors KNOW that? In this special workshop just for teens, we’ll taste-test fermented foods and practice this ancient culinary skill by making kraut. We’ll also study where medicinal plants show up in Jewish texts, and how they have been used to promote holistic health. You’ll leave with your own kraut and herbal salve!
February 10th: The Wonders of Baking
10:00 am – 12:00 PM
In our baking workshop, we will focus on wheat’s significance in Judaism, and the journey that it takes from field to table. We will situate the wheat harvest in the Jewish agricultural calendar (harvest at Shavuot), as well as study the laws of peah (donating a corner of your field) and the Jewish approach to hunger and justice. Teens will thresh, winnow and grind wheat that was grown on site to make a traditional pastry like hamantaschen or rugelach. We will also make jam from scratch to enjoy with the pastries. Each program begins with grounding through meditation, song or movement. To close, we will reflect on the day and enjoy snacks together.
