Food of the Gods: Chocolate Making & Raw Cacao Workshop

Tuesday, February 12, 2019
3:30 pm - 5:30 pm

Chocolate can be seen as a symbol of love and sensuality. Come learn how to make your own handmade chocolate, whether it be to show love to yourself, family, loved ones, or romantic partners!

We will create and taste delicious, raw, organic chocolate in several forms: fresh cacao beans, chocolate bars, and cacao paste. We will also explore cacao’s rich history, learn about its medicinal and ceremonial uses and trace its journey from the pre-colonial Mayan context to its current form as a luxury good in Western culture.

Each participant will take home some handmade chocolate, truffles, and hot chocolate elixir, and receive printed recipes and suggested sources of direct trade cacao from cooperatives, so that you can make your own at home.

This workshop has limited spaces available and always sells out, so please register in advance to make sure you can come!

Accessibility Notes: This workshop will be held in our ADA accessible Koret Community Kitchen. We have accessible parking spots in our lot, however please leave time to find street parking if needed, as our lot fills up quickly. FM receivers are available for those hard of hearing.

About the Facilitators:

Daniel Jubelirer has been involved in organizing and social change work for the past 10 years. Chocolate has sustained him through some of the most challenging and dark moments in life. He studied Peace Studies at Naropa University, and has traveled in Mexico, Guatemala and Costa Rica learning traditional chocolate making practices. He believes culture-shifting lies at the heart of social change, and that there is no problem to which community is not the answer. Daniel works as a life and leadership coach for social change leaders and is leading the youth delegation to the 2018 U.N. Climate Talks in Poland. He completed the Urban Adamah Fellowship in 2015.

Josh Van Vliet is a passionate chocolatier. When he’s not making chocolate, he is the Director of Community Partnerships with the Academy for Coaching Excellence, and a certified life, leadership, and style coach. Josh works to equip leaders with the skills to contribute resilience, creativity and support to creating a world where everyone is supported 100%. Josh is also an accomplished guitarist, bassist and singer, and loves getting groups of people singing together. You might also find him cooking communal dinners with his housemates (he lives in a co-op of coaches), or indulging his love for perfectly baked chocolate chip cookies and well-fitting pants.
