Camp Assistant Director

This summer, Camp Urban Adamah is offering nine weeks of programming for children ages 3-5 (Sprouts) and children entering first to fifth grade (Main Camp) that feature hands-on projects and activities exploring themes that integrate nature-connection, farm-to-food-making, crafts, sustainability, community-building, and Jewish values.

The Assistant Camp Director provides programmatic, educational, and behavioral support to campers and staff members throughout the day. The Assistant Camp Director is responsible for co-facilitating staff training along with the Camp Director and Director of Education, cultivating a positive camp culture among campers and staff, leading opening and closing circles, and communicating with parents dependent on need.


Camp Preparation

This position begins one month before camp so that the Assistant Camp Director can be onboarded and help prepare for camp. Urban Adamah will train the Assistant Camp Director in our pedagogy, camp culture, music, farm jobs, and camp activities. Camp preparation includes gathering materials, reviewing schedules, reviewing camp systems and protocols, familiarizing themselves with the campus, preparing for staff training, and more.

Supervise & Mentor Staff

Along with the Camp Director, the Assistant Camp Director is responsible for supervising a staff of 10-15 educators. With guidance from the Camp Director, the Assistant Director must give timely and constructive feedback to camp staff. This is done through informal daily check-ins and biweekly formal check-ins.

Conduct Staff Meetings

The Assistant Camp Director will co-facilitate daily staff meetings along with the Camp Director. The Assistant Camp Director must identify issues that need to be addressed amongst the staff, achievements to celebrate, and ways to promote a healthy and fun environment; build an agenda in collaboration with the Camp Director in a timely manner; and prepare necessary materials for staff meeting accordingly.

Leading All-Camp Activities

The Assistant Director will lead frontal activities including opening and closing circles for all of camp, conducting “share time” for campers after lunch, and introducing “specialties” to all of camp in a fun and engaging manner.

Provide Support

Throughout the camp day, the Assistant Camp Director is on-call to assist the Camp Director as well as other camp staff in any way needed. This may mean, for example, attending to a sick or injured camper, filling in for a sick counselor, intervening in a behavioral issue  with a camper or a group of campers, or providing additional supervision.

Quality Assessment

Throughout the day, the Assistant Camp Director should be assessing our programs. The Assistant Camp Director should work with camp staff to ensure they are meeting our pedagogical goals, provide feedback and suggestions on how staff can improve their group facilitation and leadership, and make changes to the schedule to meet camp’s needs.

Closing Camp

The Assistant Director is responsible for closing camp at the end of the day after the Camp Director leaves at 5pm. This means the Assistant Camp Director is available to assist the After Camp Coordinator during After Camp Hours and send any timely emails and phone calls to camp families.


Candidates must have experience leading children’s programs and collaborating with other staff, ideally in farm and garden-based education and/or Jewish experiential education. Candidates must have experience mentoring and supervising others. The Assistant Director should be kind, enthusiastic, willing to try new things, generous, willing to be silly, flexible, creative, caring, and able to maintain a positive team attitude throughout a full work day.

Main Camp Training: July 1st-July 5th, 2019
Main Camp Sessions 1 & 2: July 8th-26th, 2019 (9am-6pm)
Mid-Camp Review & Set-Up: July 29th-August 31st, 2019
Main Camp Sessions 3 & 4: August 5th – 23rd, 2019 (9am-6pm)



Counselors are supervised by the Camp Urban Adamah Director.


The Assistant Camp Director will be paid between $13,000-$15,000 depending on experience. This is a temporary seasonal position that conforms to the legal requirements of such positions; as such it is not bound by overtime pay requirements and does not include any benefits.
