After Camp Counselor - Sprouts

This summer, Camp Urban Adamah is offering three weeks of Sprouts, a two- week and one-week session especially designed for children entering pre-k to kindergarten (at least three years old and potty-trained). Sprouts campers enjoy their day exploring our working organic farm and learning how to be great farm helpers to the crops, animals and each other. With Jewish teachings and stories guiding their experience, Sprouts introduces young children to Judaism’s deep connections to the natural world and their place in it.  

Camp Urban Adamah’s After Camp Program helps make camp accessible to many families in our community.  The After-Camp Counselors make the last part of a child’s day at camp positive and fun. After-Camp group size can range from 8-12 campers, is multi-age, and is staffed at a 1:6 ratio.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Activity Leader

The After-Camp Counselor helps inspire a calm afternoon atmosphere on the farm by helping children transition from a larger-group camp experience to a smaller, more intimate group setting.  This person helps children engage in the activities offered for the afternoon, and may lead specific offerings including art projects, sports games, card games, puzzles, or other fun activities. They uphold behavioral expectations clearly and consistently, and may work one-on-one with children needing extra support. They also ensure timely and appropriate communication with the After-Camp Coordinator should any programmatic issues or behavioral concerns arise with particular campers.

Program Support

The After-Camp Counselor helps to ensure that all aspects of the After-Camp program run smoothly, including all program activities, afternoon snack, and pick-up times. Along with the Program Coordinator, the After-Camp Counselor maintains farm cleanliness after other staff have finished clean-up, and puts away/cleans any materials used in the After-Camp program. Young children may also need help changing their clothes and using the bathroom (no diaper-changing).

SAFETY

The After-Camp Counselor ensures the safety of all children who are part of the After-Camp Counselor, including ensuring children stay on Urban Adamah premises until picked up by the appropriate person.  They keep a birds-eye-view of the farm and is aware of where all children are at any given moment, as well as who might need extra support or assistance. They are also available to administer basic first aid when necessary and support emergency protocols and procedures.

REQUIREMENTS

The ideal candidate will have experience working with young children ages 3-5 in an educational and outdoor setting and have experience leading sensory-rich activities. ECE credits and preschool experience are appreciated, as well as previous experience with farm and garden based education and/or Jewish environmental education. Music, art, drama, and movement are all great talents to bring to this position. Generally, we want teammates who are kind, enthusiastic, good listeners, willing to try new things, generous, willing to be silly, flexible, creative, caring, and able to maintain a positive team attitude throughout a full work day. Jewish background/knowledge is not necessary, but is helpful.

CAMP SESSIONS

June 10th-14th, 2019 ; June 17th-28th, 2019

The After-Camp Program runs from 3pm ­– 5pm daily.  The After-Camp Counselor must be onsite from 2:30 – 6:00pm every day and will be responsible for set up from 2:30 – 3pm and clean up from 5:30 – 6pm. On Fridays, they arrive at 12pm to provide additional support.

SUPERVISION

The After-Camp Counselor is managed by the After-Camp Program Coordinator and supervised by the Camp Director.

COMPENSATION

$1,260-$1,350 depending on experience. This includes three days of training and 15 days of camp. Paid biweekly. This is a temporary seasonal position that conforms to the legal requirements of such positions; as such it is not bound by overtime pay requirements and does not include any benefits.
